How Many People Are on Drugs? And the Solution? The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime estimates that over 200 million people consume illicit drugs. While this is an overall estimate, it clearly shows the magnitude of the problem. And just what drug is the most commonly used? Here is a basic breakdown: 163 million use marijuana These aren't cumulative numbers as they do not include multiple drugs used per individual and this does not include pharmaceuticals. It's important to note that more countries reported increases in drug use than decreases. The overall census is that drug use is still growing globally at a rapid rate. It is noteworthy that Marijuana is by far the most-commonly used drug. It is also known as one of the "gateway drugs" -- drug use often starts with marijuana. Obviously, we must do something about this now, or it will only get worse. If we are going to change our culture, we must start with our youth. If we reach our children with real education, with truthful and useful information about drugs; and teach them to think for themselves on the subject of drugs and morality, we will gradually improve the scene. While our good teachers have their hands full teaching reading, writing and arithmetic, it is up to us to provide a helping hand in those specialty areas, such as drug prevention and education.
