What Are "Good Drugs"?

In Bolinas, California (north of San Francisco), local teenagers and young adults spilled out onto the streets with vodka bottles tucked into their trousers.

Before the end of the night, one boy was found in a heap on the bathroom floor, reportedly from drinking too much, and another, who took some “bad drugs,” ended up hospitalized for two days.

Those incidents, plus reports of young girls at the local High School scratching their faces from taking too much speed, led a group of Bolinas residents to meet at the Community Center this past Friday to discuss teen drug use.

At the meeting, it soon became clear that the definition of “bad drugs” was up for debate.

Are “bad drugs” only “hard" drugs like methamphetamine (speed), LSD, heroin and ecstasy, or does marijuana count too?

Is the problem the fact that the kids ingested ecstasy pills possibly laced with other drugs, or is the problem that the kids were taking pills at all?

Some parents expressed concerns about a “permissive” culture.

Since many parents had smoked or are still smoking pot, many didn't think pot was a bad drug.

It was felt that what kids need are more activities, with more responsible adult supervision, they said.

So is there such a thing as "bad drugs" and "good drugs"?

Every parent must know the answer to this very important question.

This recent incident illustrates how confused parents are on this subject.
