Drug Dealers Cut Cost and Gain Customers! Demand for cocaine remains steady. Even though Columbia's cocoa fields are being destroyed, the drugs street price in the U.S. continues to fall. As with any business having good cost management is key to remaining competitive. Just as a company like Dell Computers will employ cost cutting measures, so do the smugglers and dealers. The drug business is no different. Drug smugglers and dealers have gotten more efficient in their operations in order to keep their prices low and increase their business volume. For example, in the early 1980's the price of one gram of cocaine was about $600.00. By the late 1990s the price had fallen to about $200.00 per gram. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the street price of a gram of cocaine in 2005 was $20 - $25 in New York, $30-100 in Los Angeles and $100-125 in Denver. Some of the price decrease has come from more efficient distribution networks. Labor costs have also decreased as well. Street vendors are now taking a smaller cut of the drug's proceeds. A lot of drug dealers who got arrested during the 1990s are now leaving prison. Their convictions and limited job experience leave very little alternative for them to get work so they are willing to take a pay cut and hit the streets again. Another major contributing factor to lowered costs is a result of lowered risk in handling the drug. Since 2001 federal drug prosecutions have fallen 25% as agents get diverted to the hunt for terrorists. Again, drugs are a business and it is all about cost of goods, labor costs, distribution costs and of course the ultimate driving factor -- demand for the product. So what impact do these factors have on us directly? Consider that during 2005-2006 there was just over a 10% increase in cocaine use among 12th graders. This shows that the drug smugglers and dealers cost cutting efforts are starting to pay off. It also shows that we all need to step up our efforts to educate our youth before they fall prey to the drug smugglers and dealers of the world. We need to get our kids into the correct mind set about drugs! While Friends of Narconon managed to reach over 1.6 million kids last year with our Truth About Drugs program, thereby changing a lot of minds, it is clear by the above information that we must work harder to reach more kids, faster. The Narconon Drug Education program is very effective in teaching kids the truth about drugs in a way they can relate to. The fact that we can now reach millions of kids using our video program simply underscores the order of magnitude needed to reach out to our youth.
