What is The Other War on Drugs? The non-medical abuse of prescription drugs is a serious and growing public health problem in the United States. An estimated 48 million people (ages 12 and older) have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in their lifetimes. This represents approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population. (Nearly 60 million people.) This is separate from the illegal drug use problem where over 23 million people need drug rehabilitation right now. The National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) Monitoring the Future survey of 8th, 10th, and 12th-graders found that: This makes these medications among the most commonly abused prescription drugs by adolescents. And as with all drugs, marketing plays a key role in getting kids to take drugs. If a very popular guy in school says .... If a very popular guy in school says "These are medications, so you know they are safe", it becomes very hard for kids to know any better. This is just one example of how these types of drugs are marketed. What some kids consider cool is the illegal use of pills that millions of others are given legally--at home by their parents or at school by a nurse. They are medications prescribed for attention deficit disorder. One of the DEA's (Drug Enforcement Administration) most tightly controlled drugs, Ritalin, has the agency worried since it's easy to get and kids believe it's safe. With 11 million Ritalin prescriptions given out every year, there's plenty circulating in what has become a schoolyard black market. Students who are prescribed the drug are selling it to their peers for a few dollars a pill. This is the exact false information that is addressed in the Narconon Truth About Drugs video program. Friends of Narconon produces award winning drug education videos that are up-to-date and popular among teachers and students. Most importantly however are the survey results. Over 90% of kids who watch our videos report that they want to tell their family and friends the truth about drugs. The only viable solution to this "Other War on Drugs" is to educate our youth before they decide to try drugs. You can do your part to help with this right now.
