The Secret to Winning the "War on Drugs" A study released in 2004 showed a drop in marijuana use. While this was great news for our culture, it was not so good news for the drug dealers! As a result, there was an increased effort to provide even more marijuana than ever before and make it yet more potent. Today pot smoking is on the rise again: An estimated 97.5 million Americans aged 12 or older tried marijuana at least once in their lifetimes, representing 40.1% of the U.S. population in that age group. The number of past year marijuana users in 2005 was approximately 25.4 million (10.4% of the population aged 12 or older). And the number of past month marijuana users was 14.6 million. Among students surveyed as part of the 2005 Monitoring the Future study, 16.5% of eighth graders, 34.1% of tenth graders, and 44.8% of twelfth graders reported lifetime use of marijuana. In 2004 16.3% of eighth graders reported use. This indicates an increase of usage starting in the eighth grade. The drug marketing machine is obviously at work. As kids become young adults we find that nearly half our young adult population has used marijuana: Approximately 49.1% of college students and 57.0% of young adults (ages 19–28) surveyed in 2005 reported lifetime use of marijuana. How does all this impact us individually? Next time you see your tax bill and realize that some of your tax dollars are going to pay for welfare and prison populations, you can start to see just how this impacts us all directly. According to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, approximately 77.6% of State prisoners and 71.2% of Federal prisoners surveyed in 2004 indicated that they used marijuana/hashish at some point in their lives. An increasing percentage of the available marijuana is high potency marijuana derived from indoor, closely controlled cannabis cultivation in Canada and the United States. The rising prevalence of high potency marijuana is evidenced by a significant (52.4%) increase in average potency of tested marijuana samples within the past 5 years. Most foreign-source marijuana smuggled into the United States enters through or between points of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border. However, drug seizure data show that the amount of marijuana smuggled into the United States from Canada via the U.S.-Canada border has risen to a significant level. The quantity of marijuana seized increased 129% in a 5-year period from 11,546 kilograms in 2001 to 26,414 kilograms in 2005. So what can be done to effectively decrease drug use? There IS hope, and there IS a proven winning approach. Stopping the drug SUPPLY is practically impossible - governments and police have been working at it for years! We can, however, reduce the DEMAND for drugs, and that is best done through EFFECTIVE DRUG EDUCATION. If young people are educated so as to not desire drugs, the drug supply would be left with the dealers! Our video/DVD Marijuana The Myth has had a tremendous success in effectively educating youth in the truth about marijuana and other drugs. This video changes kids' minds about drugs with encouraging percentages (70% and up).
