Holiday Tips for Parents About Teens!

I think it is important to provide parents with some facts regarding drugs.

For instance, research shows that kids who learn about the risks of drug abuse from their parents or caregivers are:

36 percent less likely to smoke marijuana
50 percent less likely to use inhalants
56 percent less likely to use cocaine and
65 percent less likely to use LSD than kids who don't.

And two-thirds of youth ages 13–17 say upsetting their parents or losing the respect of family and friends is one of the main reasons they don't smoke marijuana or use other drugs.

Tips for Parents to Consider this Holiday Season:

1. When talking to children about drugs this holiday season, it is important for parents to send a clear message about staying away from marijuana. Research shows that kids of parents who strongly disapprove of trying marijuana are far less likely to have used marijuana in the past month than kids whose parents only somewhat disapprove or who expressed no clear opinion. Also, truthful and factual information about marijuana will go a long way to assisting kids in making the right decision not to try it.

2. Parents can also make a difference by monitoring where their kids are and who they are with and by setting rules with clear consequences for breaking them. Another interesting statistic is that lower levels of marijuana use were found among teens whose parents monitor their activities and peer relationships, limit the time spent watching TV , give them responsibilities around the house and recognize their teens' successes and good behavior. In other words, make sure to reward good behavior as well as discipline bad behavior.

Resources are available to help parents prevent their kids from using marijuana. A great first step is to sit down together and watch our "Marijuana The Myth" DVD. Kids will discover facts they did not know about marijuana. Parents will be particularly interested in the special features (included in the DVD) "Why Parents Are the Last to Know" and "Why Kids Take Drugs".

You may think right now of a parent you know who you could use such help and they may be even on your Holiday gift list! If so, keep reading to find out about our 2-for-1 offer.
