What Is Psychosynthesis? Robert Assagioli, a practicing psychiatrist in Florence, Italy, defined "psychosynthesis" as the "formation or reconstruction of a new personality - the transpersonal or 'spiritual self.'" He stated, "What distinguishes psychosynthesis from many other attempts at psychological understanding is the position we take as to the existence of a spiritual self... Our position affirms that all the superior manifestations of the human psyche, such as creative imagination, intuition, aspiration, genius, are facts which are as real and as important as are the conditioned reflexes, and therefore, are susceptible to research and treatment as scientifically conditioned reflexes." This approach eventually showed itself in our public education. As psychology began to assert itself as an "acceptable science" in the "sick sixties," Assagioli's "psychosynthesis" is credited with creating a paradigm that enabled an integration (synthesis) of pshchology with spirituality. Assagioli emphasized a holistic world view, laying the groundwork for the 1990s educational art of teaching "holistic education" - teaching the "whole child." He was also the originator of a group of exercises for "Spiritual Psychosynthesis" which is the base for what we now call "role playing." Later called "Guided Affective Imagery," role playing was widely practiced in elementary and secondary classrooms, business training sessions, counseling sessions, and religious services. To the unsuspecting soul, all that may sound acceptable. However, when you as a parent send your child to school, you expect him or her to get education. Therapy has no place in the public school rooms. But with Assagioli's theories it has infiltrated the halls of learning. Such infiltration would be excusable, if it produced a favorable result for our future generation. However, the ongoing decline in youth literacy and increase in crime and drug use are a living proof to the failure of the attempt to substitute "therapy" for education.
