Who's Got the Right Attitude? A recent attitude-tracking survey revealed that "parents are less likely to think their child sees much risk in taking various drugs once or twice." In other words, they don't think the child sees as much risk in taking drugs as children used to. Surveys show that in 1998 parents thought their kids had a higher perception of risk. Now, whose attitude has changed - the parents' or the kids'? Truthfully, it's both. What is the reason for this change? Have the kids changed? Or do today's parents live in a heavier cloud of "denial"? My personal research has shown there to be a tremendous amount of confusion among parents on the subject of kids and drugs. Naturally, no parent wants to think their kids are doing drugs. In fact, in the last 15 years of working in the drug education field, I have found that parents seem to go through different phases as their kids grow up. While the kids are in elementary school, most parents are very involved; they are excited and hopeful that their child will succeed. When their kids get into junior high school I have observed parents start to get a little less hopeful and, in some cases, desperate about their teenagers. By the time kids get to high school, many parents I've spoken to simply don't know what to do to make their earlier hopes and dreams for their child a reality. At that point a parent can only see what they want to see. It becomes hard for them to look through even-obvious signs and tell what's really going on with their child. That is complicated by the fact that kids know how to keep secrets from their parents! They also know what's wrong with parents. I've had teenager after teenager tell me about it in interviews; then when I interviewed parents, I found that what the teenagers had said was true. This is a major barrier to families that have and or suspect drug use. The first solution I can offer parents is to find out what kids are saying about you, as regards drugs, that you don't know. I can assure you this will open your eyes and help you do something about it. Since summer is upon us, and we know kids like to go out and "party" with all that free time, you as a parent need to be prepared to deal with things before they get out of control. The best way to do that is for you to get educated on the subject of kids and drugs. That is why we created our DVD - Marijuana The Myth. It'll give you the true information about drugs in the body. Plus, as part of this DVD, you can watch "Why Parents Are the Last to Know," where you'll get the inside "scoop" on what kids really think, and find out what to do about it; as well as "Why Kids Take Drugs" to give you an inside look at the real "why"--as told by the kids themselves. You'll be enlightened by what you hear. I guarantee it! So don't wait, Contact Donna Miller at Friends of Narconon to get your own DVD or sponsor a school today. CALL: 1-800-882-6862.
