Friends of Narconon President's Briefing--Issue 38   PDF  Print  Email

No Way! Not MY Kid!

Desperate parents, dissatisfied with outdated ways of trying to tell whether or not their kids are using drugs (such as shuffling through their drawers, smelling their breath, searching their eyes) are now demanding proof.

They're dragging their teens to drug testing labs and buying home drug-testing kits by the case over the Internet.

Let's face it: Drugs change personalities and can turn that once shining star of a child into a crazed addict willing to do anything to get their fix.

So when faced with such a situation, drug testing becomes a viable option for a parent who just isn't sure.

In my earlier research I found that, for the most part, parents are in "denial" on the subject of their kids doing drugs.

In other words, they don't want to believe that their child has been doing drugs; even when they are dead and in the county morgue with tests showing drugs in their system!

So what are parents to do? If you ask the Drug Policy Alliance, a national non-profit agency that promotes an overhaul of the nation's approach to the drug problem, they'll tell you that parental testing tears at the bond between children and adults.

"It can have consequences of breaking down communication, of creating rebellion, breaking down relationships of trust," said Jennifer Kern, a research associate with the office of legal affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance. "Drug testing of teens should be done by medical professionals who can better interpret test results and refer parents to appropriate resources if necessary," Kern said.

Sure. What "medical professionals" should be called upon to handle this problem? How hard is it to read the result of a drug test?

This stand by The Drug Policy Alliance is just another reason why their approach to the drug problem will only worsen it: They want to send drug users to medical professionals so they can be given legal drugs instead.

But more to the point, does drug testing help? Yes. Why? Because it at least elevates a parent from total denial to being willing to confront the situation and start dealing with it.

However, drug testing alone is not a solution. It only confirms the already-suspected problem. The next question is: How do you deal with that problem once confirmed? More importantly, how do you deal with drug use before it becomes a problem?

That is where Friends of Narconon come in. We provide the proper education that kids and parents alike can benefit from.

In our current DVD - Marijuana The Myth - there are three features designed to educate kids and parents. First, there is Marijuana The Myth. This feature explains in an entertaining fashion, how drugs store in the body's fatty tissues. Then there is the feature Why Parents Are the Last to Know. This reveals to parents how aware kids are that parents are in denial and provides solutions for parents on what to do when they suspect their kids may be doing drugs. The final feature is called Why Kids Take Drugs. This is a revealing look at the drug problem in our schools as told by students themselves. It also features never-before seen footage of Bobby Wiggins on what drugs are and why it is that kids take drugs.

Drug testing is a tool parents can use. But first order of business is for both the parents and the kids to get educated in the truth about drugs. That will open up communication channels never-before available.

Once that is done, it won't be such a shock to the kid when the parent decides to do drug testing. In other words, I would recommend that parents take this first step of education and then, if necessary, increase the discipline. Marijuana The Myth DVD, with its three features, provides you with vital tools to accomplish this education.
