What's Going on in Emergency Rooms?
There was a drop in marijuana use by teenagers in recent years. This is seemingly great news. However, as it goes with any business, it is the job of marketing guys to find and open new markets. Such is the case in the drug business, both legal and illegal. And just how powerful can that marketing be? In 2002 there was an increase in the number of emergency department mentions for the drug MDMA (Ecstasy). (Marijuana use had started declining during that same period!) MDMA is a powerful hallucinogenic stimulant which is highly addictive and can be fatal.
The highest number of emergency department mentions was in Philadelphia, Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York. Some states were new to Ecstasy drug usage.
For example, for the state of Illinois it was the first year that "club-drug" treatment admissions were tracked and a majority of those admitted were male (68%) and white (75%); in Texas, treatment admissions with a primary, secondary or tertiary [third in place] MDMA problem rose from 63 in 1998 to 521 in 2002. That's a major increase and it only represents one state's reporting. And that does not say anything about those who did not show up to an emergency room.
What does this all mean? The drug lords have some pretty powerful marketing going on. We expose that in our upcoming "Ecstasy - The Real Story" two-part video.
But how is it that our kids continue to get lured into the drug scene? Why is it that we can reduce the use of marijuana, only to see an increase in Ecstasy usage? It is all about education!
In our current DVD "Marijuana The Myth" we reveal the truth about drugs lodging in the fatty tissues of the body. We have found that such information has a dramatic impact on a kid's decision regarding taking ANY drug. That is a key point!
If one knows WHY drugs are not good, they can make a better decision not to take them.
The same holds true for parenting issues. If a parent knows why kids take drugs and how to deal with it, they can then be prepared to make the correct decisions and take the correct actions to help their child.
Fortunately, our Marijuana The Myth DVD has information for both kids and parents. For parents we have two features on this DVD. Why Parents Are the Last to Know and Why Kids Take Drugs. This information is a must have for any family.
It is also valuable for those of us who do not have a problem with kids and drugs but have social connections that who do. Being armed with this information will ensure you know what to do when a situation involving a drug problem arises.
