What Can Parents Do About the Drug Problem?

What role do parents play in a child's life?

As a parent I can attest to the fact that it can be tough to set aside the kind of time needed to be with your kids, not only when they are young and rely on you, but as they grow older and through their teenage years.

In my research I have found that parents of young kids, in grade school for example, are very hopeful their child will grow up and do well in life.As the kids become teenagers, there is often a sense of despair. By the time the kids graduate high school, many parents just don't know what to do. They know something is wrong, but they do not know how to fix it!

Some of the results of this research can be seen in the video feature Why Parents Are the Last to Know, which is on the Marijuana The Myth DVD.

Here we uncovered the key reason parents lose their kids on the subject of drugs but we also provide some solutions.

More to the point, a recent study of more than 4,000 students in grades 7th through 12th revealed the following:

For each degree of tolerance (on a five-point scale) toward marijuana that teens perceive in their parents, there is a 33 percent increase in frequency of teen marijuana use.

Frequency of marijuana use declines 10% for each degree that teens perceive their parents are monitoring their activities, even after taking into account peer influence.

Risk of illegal drug use is reduced by 14% for each degree that teens believe parents are monitoring their activities.

The study also found that siblings have a major impact on teen drug use. Having an older sibling who used marijuana was associated with a 58% increased likelihood that a teen would also use the drug.

Based on these statistics alone, you can ask yourself "How well do I do with regards to these points?"

If you feel you need some help or know another parent who does, then I recommend you get the DVD Marijuana The Myth. It answers so many questions for parents and provides simple solutions for dealing with the subject of kids and drugs.

Most of us will have someone we know who's had a drug problem. The question is, what do we do about it?

The answer is simple. Proper education before the problem starts.

For example, we have over 60 million school-aged kids in America. If we reduced the risk of illegal drug use by 14%, as stated in the above statistics, we could have prevented over 6 million kids from using drugs.

We must remember: what we do today will impact, or not, what happens to our children tomorrow. Can parents help? You bet! All you need is the right tools to get you started.
