Friends of Narconon President's Briefing--Issue 15   PDF  Print  Email

Is It Really Dad's Fault?

So Mom... Dad... Who is going to talk to junior about drugs?

What do you say?

Are you sure they are not using drugs now?

I just reviewed recent survey data released by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America® which reports that fathers talk less often with their children about drugs than do mothers. The data was drawn from the Partnership's latest Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS).

The data, released on Father's Day this year, found that only 37 percent of fathers have talked with their kids "four or more times" in the past year about drugs, compared to 45 percent of mothers.

Research has shown drug use is lower among teens who report learning a lot about the risks of drugs at home.

Another interesting thing this survey found was that fathers were less likely to see negative consequences in use of some drugs.

Less than half of fathers report believing that if their child smokes marijuana, they will face consequences such as difficulty coping with life's problems and getting along with family.

Now think about that one for a minute. Where do you think fathers got this sort of reasonable attitude?

Do you recall my earlier briefing where we talked about the "Thought Education" taking place in school? You know, the "Good Drugs/Bad Drugs" information. Well, years later we have fathers showing a reasonable attitude toward drugs.

With all this going on, what are the chances of your kids getting exposed to drugs and experimenting with them? Not to mention becoming addicted to drugs.

So what is all this leading up to? Communication!

It is very critical for parents to take an active roll in communicating to their kids about drugs.

At Friends of Narconon we have created some tools to help you with this.

Our newest DVD's have great information for parents.

It is the first step you must take in talking to kids about drugs--get educated yourself. You need this information.

So call 800-882-6862 and ask for Donna or Sara and get your DVD sent to you. You'll get valuable information on how to spot signs of drug use and how to go about handling it.

Don't wait for others to educate your kids about drugs. It just might be the wrong person doing it!

Sincerely,
Robert Hernandez CCDC*
President
