The person tries to escape some physical or emotional pain by taking drugs. The person finds that drugs offer temporary relief so continues to use them. Cells in the body become accustomed to large amounts of drug metabolites (a broken down form of the drug). When one tries to quit, cells in the body that have become accustomed to such large amounts of metabolites are now forced to deal with much decreased amounts. The body perceives that it needs the drug to function and demands the drug through physical cravings. With continued use of the drug, the body's inability to completely eliminate all traces of the drug metabolites diminishes. The metabolites that remain are stored in the fatty tissues and these, released, cause cravings. Cravings become so severe that the addict will do almost anything (in many cases abandoning all previous moral teachings) to get more of the drug. The addict commits misdeeds against family, friends and self to satisfy these unrelenting cravings. Because of these misdeeds, the addicts cannot face themselves and dive deeper into drugs. They are now entrapped in full blown addiction, with two aspects of the condition. The biophysical condition and the biochemical personality. NARCONON addresses The Biochemical Side and the reasons why a person became addicted in the first place. Handling The Biochemical Side Of Addiction Handling The Biochemical Side Of Addiction - THE SAUNA EXERCISE PROGRAM: The purpose of the Sauna/Exercise program is to purge the body of drug residues, thus greatly reducing or completely removing cravings. This is accomplished through an exact regimen that consists of the following: A. Exercise, preferably running, to stimulate circulation. Handling the person themselves - RECLAIMING A LIFE: After addressing the physical aspect of addiction and once the student is thinking clearly, the Narconon program moves through a series of specialized courses to help the addict recognize addiction life-style and thought processes. Once these are identified and addressed, the student is introduced to a new sense of values and developmental life skills. These courses complement each other: Learning Improvement Course enables the individual to enhance reading and comprehension skills. It enhances the ability to acquire and retain knowledge and overcome the barriers to study and learning no matter what one is studying in life. Communication and Perception Course aids in breaking past impulsive behaviors and helps the individual overcome "living in the past." Personal Values and Integrity Course is an ethics-based study program, the goal being to improve choices in life by applying the basic concepts of ethics and morals. Ups and Downs in Life Course is designed to help students identify and disconnect from anti-social associations or relationships that may have adversely influenced them in the past, and gives fresh guidelines for the future. Changing Conditions in Life Course teaches the individual to divide life into separate categories (self, family, group and spiritual) in order to inspect and repair damaged areas by utilizing practical formulas. The Way to Happiness Course teaches the individual 21 guidelines that cover a moral and ethical code and way of living that results in a happier, more productive person. The program is complete when the student recognizes and accepts responsibility for old habit patterns and harmful actions against others. The student examines and rehabilitates relationships with self, family, friends and society. The student creates a life plan for growth in all areas of life. Students leave Narconon enthused and ready to embark on their new life. Copyright (c) 2007 Narconon of Georgia, Inc. All rights reserved.
